MobTown 14

$664.67

Same shell. Different philosophy.

The MobTown 14 is built on the identical platform as the MobTown Elite: eight plies at 5.4mm, Michigan maple over an African mahogany core, cross-grained and pressed in the USA. Maple supplies the attack and the projection. Mahogany fattens the low mids and pulls the decay in. That fat, woody crack from the American records of the early seventies.

What changes is everything bolted to it — and that changes the drum.

Ten die-cast lugs, and what mass does to a shell

The Elite uses eighteen lightweight tube lugs that touch the shell at single small points. The MobTown 14 uses ten double-sided die-cast lugs, which is a fundamentally different idea.

Die-cast lugs are heavy, and that mass sits against the shell. The result is a drum with less overtone and more focus — the ring gets shorter, the fundamental gets more definite, and the attack comes forward. Where the Elite gives you a wide, open canvas to tune across, the MobTown 14 gives you a strong opinion about what a snare drum should sound like.

Ten lugs also means ten tension rods per head, which is more even pressure around the bearing edge than the eight most drums this size carry. Once it's dialed in, it holds.

The depth

Five and a half inches is the most-used snare depth in recorded music, and there's a reason. It's the balance point: enough air behind the head for body, shallow enough to stay quick and articulate. The six-inch Elite trades a little speed for a little more weight. This one doesn't ask you to make that trade.

Hardware

  • Stick Saver 2.3mm triple-flanged batter hoop, 10-hole. The rolled outer flange is easier on stick shoulders during rimshots than a standard sharp-edged flange.

  • 2.3mm triple-flanged snare-side hoop, 10-hole. Standard profile on the bottom, because nothing hits it — the Stick Saver profile is spent where it earns its keep.

  • Chrome-plated throw-off and butt plate. Straightforward, roadworthy, nothing to fail at a gig.

  • German 25-strand snare wire. Twenty-five strands instead of the usual twenty — more sensitivity, a wider dynamic floor, more sizzle under a ghost note.

Heads

  • Batter: Aquarian Texture Coated with Power Dot. A single ply of 10mil film under Aquarian's Z-100 satin texture coating, with a Power Dot bonded to the underside of the center. You keep the sensitivity and warmth of a single-ply head, but the dot focuses the center hit and cuts the ringiest overtones. Tuned high it cracks; tuned low it's punchy and fat.

  • Resonant: Aquarian Hi-Performance snare side. 3mil clear with reinforcement where the snare wires cross the head.

Elite or MobTown?

We'll be straight with you, because the two drums cost different money and one of them is right for you.

The Elite suits a player who tunes by feel — who moves the drum around depending on the room, the song, the night. That's what eighteen tube lugs and the wide tuning range are for.

The MobTown 14 suits a player who sets a pitch and keeps it. If you found your snare sound years ago and you're not looking for it anymore, the extra tuning latitude is money you don't need to spend. This is the same shell, the same wood, most of the same voice — with hardware chosen to lock it down instead of open it up.
